State Representative Dan Swanson (R-Alpha) offered the following comment in response to Governor J.B. Pritzker’s 2023 State of the State Address.
“The Governor continues to call for spending at a higher tempo than the rate at which we take in revenue, which is especially concerning since our unfriendly business climate has led to a net loss of more than 3% of corporate tax revenues,” said Swanson. “He has proposed more spending, propped up by one-time federal relief funds, during a time of continued high inflation. As the federal funds run out, we are faced with tax hikes and deficits. This is irresponsible and unsustainable.”
The Fiscal Year 2024 State Budget proposed by Governor Pritzker on Wednesday proposes spending $49.6 billion, an addition of $2.75 billion from last year, even though state revenues are expected to decline by $1.4 billion due to the falling off of federal pandemic relief funds.
