Saturday was a busy day…Galesburg, to Kewanee, to Knoxville.
It started out cooking hotdogs and hamburgers at the NAACP Galesburg backpacks in the park event at Kiwanis Park. The event featured many local community groups – including CASA, GYA, GHAS, BNSF, Galesburg FD, Galesburg PD, Knox County Sheriff Dept, local barber and many more. Culver’s was providing ice cream and yogurt. Horseback rides were available and a local barber was providing haircuts. As always, a great event.
After that I traveled to participate in Drew Haverback Court of Honor. Normally, I do not travel outside the district to do this, but this was special. Drew is the son of CSM (Ret USA) Bob and Kollette Haverback, who I served with for over 20 years. Drew repaired picnic tables, cut brush/trees and started building a new pavilion at the Izaak Walton League Skeet range in Kewanee. Drew will soon be entering the military. Because of his Eagle Scout he will be promoted to E-3/PFC. Congratulations Drew and Family.
I then traveled to Knoxville to attend the Throwdown, a Western IL Showdown. This was a huge event. Many of the local county fair champion beef, pig, goat or sheep winners participated in a judging contest at the Knox County fairground. A huge event, with many participants with some beautiful animals and a large crowd. You can see in the pictures how large the animals are and how well-mannered too. Notice cattle laying next to the trailer, joining the family as they cookout or enjoy a beverage. Congratulations to all the exhibitors, to the group who made this all possible for the young people and to the sponsors.
