Opposing HB 2827

Today, I spoke in opposition to HB 2827, the homeschool bill. Families started to arrive at the Capitol at 5AM to stand in unity opposing this bill. I’ve heard estimates of 3-4000 people in attendance.

The bill puts homeschool and private schools in a situation where they must register their children at their local school or Regional Office of Education. This opens the door for parents to be subject to ROE personnel to review curriculum taught by the families. It creates an unfunded mandate on the schools and ROEs. Additionally, it takes away parents’ rights to educate their children.

Approximately 50,000 people registered in opposition to the approximately 1,000 proponents. The sponsor plans to file an amendment so it will most likely come back to the Education Policy committee I serve on.
